An Open Letter to FDEP

Dear FDEP, I am writing today to express my disapproval of the plans to revise the land use of Jonathan Dickinson State Park (JDSP). I disagree with this plan based on concerns for ecology, concerns with projected use of the proposed lands, and concerns about the future of the park. Ecological Concerns In heavily developed South Florida, it is rare to find a plot of land with minimal development. As is stated on the state park website, the proposed development areas is part of a series of dune habitat of the Atlantic Coastal Ridge. To quote the JDSP website: “ The hills found in the eastern portion of the park adjacent to US highway 1 are some of the only hills found in the area and many of the plants and animals which grow upon them are unique to the desert like conditions of the dunes. Reflections on Fall 2019

4 Semesters Down As I sit here in my apartment the weekend after finals week, there is an overwhelming and almost suffocating nothingness to do. But at this time, I'm taking a moment to look back at the past semester and appreciate all that has happened in the time. Within all that Is, there is a web of confusion. We wrestle the strings until we realize that our job is not to untangle it, but solely appreciate the pattern woven. While we await the development of a vaccine and/or treatment for COVID-19, society has felt the economic impacts of the pandemic and there will no doubt be aftershocks when the pandemic is over. Since deciding to be enroll in a PhD program, I have tried to become more conscious about the state of Academia. One thing that has caught my eye has been the economic impact that the pandemic has had on colleges and universities.
